WilloToons Connect: Meet Helen Jane Hearn

For my very first full-length episode, I could not be more thrilled to introduce you all to one of my most favorite creative ladies, Mrs. Helen Jane Hearn. We met at SXSW in 2006, and since then, year after year, I continue to be inspired and completely in awe of her talent, beauty and wisdom.

“I want to help people feel like creativity is something they can grab. I feel the best way to do that is through celebrating.” ~ Helen Jane

When I first had the idea for WilloToons Connect, I started thinking of self-employed creatives who not only work for themselves, but those who work from the heart. Dynamic movers & shakers who get how incredibly awesome and amazing it is to have the freedom to do what you love, and yet also have felt the major challenges that come with running your own business based on your passion; all the while balancing an active social life, having a family and staying connected to creativity. Helen Jane gets it. And then some.

In this episode, Helen Jane and I discuss being honest with yourself, taking good care of your creativity and listening to your dreams in order to bring more joy into your life.

Can you relate to this conversation? We’d love to hear your thoughts and/or questions in the comments!

This is my first full-length episode for WilloToons Connect! Do you like where this is going? I hope so, and would love to hear your feedback (either in the comments or via my contact form). Especially if you’re having trouble seeing the video… I need help working out the kinks.

Speaking of… because I’m just getting started, I could really use your help spreading the word. If you like this episode, share it with your friends, and feel free to post the trailer for this episode or the trailer for WilloToons Connect on your blog, too.

I think the whole world can benefit from the awareness around self-care and listening to what you want. Wishing you all happiness and health!

Really enjoyed the episode (first episode for me, will definitely watch more). You covered quite a few points that hit home for me.

I made a career change to graphic design (graduated) about 3 years ago and since then I’ve been on the fence about stepping out on my own, which is what I truly want from this career. I’ve been doing freelance work here and there but the confidence to ‘just do it’ 100% has been lacking. I’m getting there and starting to put the pieces into place, and it’s little things like this video (and people like you) that really help my inner voice catch up to my ambition.

Look forward to watching more episodes. :)

    • Thanks, Craig! Good for you, listening to what you want and making it happen. Exciting!

I know those inner voices all too well, and have some great episodes coming up on that topic that I think you’ll enjoy. ;)

Thanks for taking the time to comment and share where you’re coming from. I’ve totally been there and am cheering you on: keep rockin’ it!

Hi- look forward to more on this series of thought:) Finding balance & pursuing new evolving areas of passion IS challenging. Yet I think you hit upon some valid tips. Thx!

  3. Great interview, gorgeous site! What struck me the most was “know your strengths and weaknesses”. I’d love it if you’d share more on how that has operated in running your own company. I don’t think I’ve ever sat down and thought about that.
I’ve been self-employed as a visual artist and teacher for 22 years now and I still feel like I have so much too learn! I just launched http://www.themindfulartist.com in March and am having fun getting that off the ground and I love connecting with others who are doing the same.

    • Hi Michele! Thank you!!

Yes, “know your strengths and own your weaknesses” is a mantra of mine. So key in running and growing a business sustainably. I wrote a post about it awhile back that can be found here: http://willotoons.com/2010/07/know-your-strengths/ – but I have a lot to say on the topic! Reading that again now I see it’s time to write another one. :)

In August I’ll be leading a few sessions around this at the Creative Conference of Entrepreneurs. I’d love to see you there! http://willotoons.com/2011/05/calling-all-creative-entrepreneurs/

Your work is lovely. It does evoke spaciousness, as your (fabulous) statement reads. It inspires me and makes me want to pick up a paintbrush right now! So fabulous that you’ve self employed for so long doing your art, and teaching others how to follow their creative voice within as well. <3 Mindful artist = Love it!!

Thank you for saying hello (and connecting with me on Facebook!).
Let’s hear it for Rad Bay Area Ladies! :D
